San Beda College Alabang’s juniors basketball team ended their incredible year by reestablishing themselves as the kings of NCAA South Juniors basketball. The Red Cubs of Alabang dominated their opponents in the NCAA South with an average winning margin of more than 20 points. They concluded the tournament with an unblemished record, highlighted by their best-of-three championship series sweep of the PCU-D Baby Dolphins.
The team also secured back-to-back championships in the 18 & Under Boys Basketball Division of PRADA. Their path to PRADA glory was particularly impressive, as they triumphed over some of the most prestigious basketball programs in the Philippines. The Red Cubs of Alabang overcame formidable opponents—including Ateneo, La Salle Green Hills, San Beda College–Rizal, and Xavier School—to claim the championship. Their victory over such elite competition exemplifies the exceptional quality of their basketball program.

The Jumpstart
A year after the pandemic, Coach James Tolentino approached his fellow alumnus and former teammate, Mitchel Verzosa, to take on the crucial role of team manager—which the latter accepted. Together, they developed strategies and initiatives aimed at bringing recognition to and enhancing the reputation of San Beda College Alabang.
Verzosa’s involvement extends far beyond typical managerial duties. He has personally bankrolled the team, covering essential expenses such as food, lodging, allowances, and miscellaneous fees vital to the program’s operations.
His generous financial support extends even further, as he has fully funded the San Pedro Spartans team, which now serves as a vital development platform for the San Beda Alabang Juniors Basketball Program. This strategic investment provides the young Red Cubs with additional competitive opportunities and exposure. It has also helped attract talent from across the Philippines, including players from Ilocos Sur, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, Davao, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, and various parts of Metro Manila.
Verzosa’s willingness to invest his own resources demonstrates his deep loyalty and commitment to his alma mater. His dual investment, combined with his personal history as a former basketball player and teammate of the coaches, creates a unique bond that strengthens the program’s foundation. He also hopes that the team’s current success will inspire greater alumni support for the athletics program.

Creating MVPs
The program has produced two of the Junior MPBL’s Most Valuable Players. Josef Calo-oy and Jhonas Panahon were both awarded MVP honors in one of the country’s most prominent leagues—the Junior MPBL—in the 16 & Under and 18 & Under divisions, respectively.
Their MVP awards at the national level reflect the program’s exceptional ability to develop young talent. The fact that San Beda Alabang has produced MVPs in both major age divisions is a testament to how complete and well-rounded their juniors basketball program truly is.

The Coaching Brain Trust
San Beda College Alabang’s coaching staff combines years of experience, deep basketball knowledge, and a unified vision for success. Leading the team is Head Coach James Tolentino, a multi-titled mentor whose track record speaks volumes about his ability to build championship-caliber teams. He has proven himself at every level of Philippine basketball—from coaching elementary squads to professional leagues—and has consistently delivered championships while developing winning cultures.
Supporting Coach Tolentino is a solid group of assistant coaches who each bring their own expertise and insight: Goy Bagares, Teddy Polinga, and Christian Tan. What makes this coaching staff especially unique is the shared history among its key members. Coach Tolentino, Christian Tan, and Teddy Polinga are all San Beda College Alabang alumni and former teammates, creating a brotherhood that goes far beyond professional relationships. Their deep connection to the school brings a level of commitment and understanding rarely seen in other coaching setups.
