San Beda College Alabang (SBCA) joyfully welcomed the newly elected Abbot-President of the Subiaco-Cassinese Congregation of the Order of St. Benedict, Rt. Rev. Dom Ignasi M. Fossas, OSB, during his pastoral visit on February 24, 2025. The historic occasion gathered administrators, faculty, students, alumni, and staff in a celebration of faith, culture, and Benedictine unity.
The visit began with a vibrant cultural program held at the St. Benedict Hall, organized by the Center for Performing Arts under the Institutional Advancement Division in collaboration with the Technical High School. The performances, showcasing chorale music, theatrical presentations, cultural and modern dances, and a pipe organ feature, reflected the creativity, devotion, and excellence of the Bedan community.
In his heartfelt welcoming remarks, Rector-President Rev. Fr. Gerardo Ma. De Villa, OSB, shared the story of SBCA’s humble beginnings. “This school of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Manila was established in 1972 and opened to primary school children,” he said. “There were 78 boys and girls enrolled in its first year of operation, with a teaching staff of five.” He noted how the institution has grown into a thriving academic community offering programs from basic education to graduate studies, including what he fondly described as “the happiest Law School.”
“As you walk through the campus,” Fr. Gerard continued, “may you bless us who pray and work, learn and teach, in this school of Benedictine heritage. We are grateful and blessed by your visit.”
Following the program, Abbot-President Fossas toured the SBCA campus, accompanied by Rev. Fr. Aelred U. Nilo, OSB, and Rev. Fr. Austin Cadiz, OSB, Abbot of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Manaila, together with school administrators and staff. The tour offered the Abbot-President a glimpse into campus life and the strong Benedictine values that permeate the institution.
A special highlight of the visit was his tour of the San Beda Museum and Archives, facilitated by Curator and Administrator Dr. Joseph Richard C. Renta III. The museum’s collection of sacred artifacts, historical relics, and works of art offered a deep insight into the spiritual and cultural heritage of San Beda. The Abbot-President, along with his companions, formally signed the museum’s guestbook to commemorate the occasion.
The SBCA community considers the Abbot-President’s visit a profound gesture of fatherly care and spiritual encouragement. His presence serves as a renewed call to live out the Benedictine motto Ora et Labora—that in all things, God may be glorified.
