DepEd Unveils Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum
A More Focused, Flexible, and Future-Ready Learning Experience for Filipino Students
The Department of Education (DepEd) has officially introduced a Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum, marking a significant step forward in improving the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of basic education in the Philippines.
Anchored on the goals of the K to 12 program, the revised curriculum is designed to better prepare learners for higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. It responds to long-standing concerns about curriculum overload, limited flexibility, and the need for stronger alignment with industry demands.
A Simpler, More Streamlined Structure
One of the most notable changes is the reduction of SHS tracks from four to two: the Academic Track and the Technical-Professional Track. This streamlined structure aims to provide clearer pathways for students while maintaining diverse opportunities for specialization.
In addition, the curriculum significantly reduces the number of required subjects. From more than 30 subjects in the previous model, students will now take only five core subjects, complemented by a range of elective courses that they can choose based on their interests and career goals. This shift allows for deeper learning and better mastery of essential competencies.
Greater Flexibility and Student Choice
Replacing the traditional strand system, the new SHS curriculum introduces clusters of electives, giving students greater freedom to design their own learning pathways. Learners are no longer confined to rigid tracks such as STEM or ABM; instead, they can explore subjects across different fields aligned with their aspirations.
A key innovation is the “doorway option,” which allows students to take elective subjects outside their chosen track. This promotes interdisciplinary learning and enables students to expand their skills and explore new interests without shifting tracks entirely.
Stronger Focus on Real-World Skills
To ensure that students are better prepared for life beyond the classroom, the strengthened curriculum places a strong emphasis on 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.
Furthermore, work immersion has been significantly expanded, with students gaining up to 320–640 hours of hands-on experience in real-world settings. This enhancement is expected to improve job readiness and provide meaningful exposure to various industries.
Preparing Future-Ready Graduates
With a more focused set of core subjects—covering communication, mathematics, science, life and career skills, and Philippine society—the new curriculum ensures that all learners build a solid foundation while developing specialized skills through electives.
Ultimately, the Strengthened SHS Curriculum aims to produce graduates who are not only academically prepared but also adaptable, skilled, and ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
Transition Plan for Learners
As part of the transition to the new curriculum, incoming Grade 12 students will continue to follow the existing SHS curriculum. This ensures a smooth and stable transition, allowing learners to complete their Senior High School journey without disruption while the new curriculum is gradually implemented.
With these reforms, DepEd reaffirms its commitment to shaping an education system that is responsive to the needs of the times—empowering Filipino learners to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and competitive world.
