“Who Touched Me?” — A Question God Still Asks Today

  • April 2, 2026

In the Gospel of Mark, we encounter a moment that seems almost puzzling.

Jesus is surrounded by a pressing crowd. People are pushing, jostling, and brushing against Him from all sides. Then suddenly, He stops, turns, and asks:

“Who touched Me?” (Mark 5:30)

The question appears strange. How can the Son of God—who sees hearts and knows all things—ask for information He already possesses?

The answer reveals not ignorance, but mercy.

The Woman Who Dared to Touch God

The woman in the story had suffered hemorrhages for twelve years. According to Jewish purity laws (Leviticus 15), her condition rendered her ritually unclean. She lived in isolation. Anyone she touched became unclean. She was excluded from normal social and religious life—in many ways, she was “socially dead.”

Yet she does the unthinkable. She enters the crowd. She approaches a rabbi. She reaches out and touches His garment.

Under the old understanding, impurity spreads from the unclean to the holy. But in Jesus, something radically new happens. Instead of defilement passing to Him, healing flows from Him to her.

This moment quietly reveals the heart of the Gospel: in Christ, holiness is no longer fragile—it is powerful, active, and life-giving.

Why Jesus Asked the Question

Jesus did not ask, “Who touched Me?” because He lacked knowledge. He asked for her sake.

She had already received physical healing. But she still carried years of shame, invisibility, and fear. By drawing her forward, Jesus gives her more than a cure—He restores her dignity. Her hidden act of faith becomes a public testimony.

Grace is not meant to remain concealed. Benedictine spirituality reminds us that God calls us from isolation into communion. Healing is complete not only when wounds close, but when the person steps back into relationship.

When she comes forward trembling, Jesus calls her “Daughter.” This is not merely a title of affection—it is a declaration of belonging. Faith does not only solve problems; it makes us family.

Near Jesus vs. Touching Jesus

Mark uses a strong Greek word to describe the crowd pressing around Christ—synthlibō, meaning to crush or squeeze. Many touched Him physically. Only one touched Him with faith.

This distinction is deeply relevant for us today. We can be near Jesus—attending Mass, praying familiar prayers, participating in rituals—and still never truly reach for Him with the heart.

Benedictine life teaches intentional presence: prayer that is attentive, worship that is sincere, faith that is lived consciously. The woman’s touch was not casual; it was desperate trust.

The Question That Echoes Today

Jesus’ question continues through the centuries:

“Who touched Me?”

Not because God does not know us, but because He invites us to step out of hiding. To move from routine to relationship. From silent need to spoken faith.

The miracle in the Gospel is not only that bleeding stopped—it is that a forgotten woman became a daughter.

Today, Christ remains present in His Word, in the Eucharist, in the sacraments, and in the poor. Many pass close to Him. Few reach out with expectant faith.

The Lord still pauses.

He still turns.

And He still asks:

“Who touched Me?”

May we have the courage to step forward.
