Who is St. Benedict of Nursia? Part 1: Early Life and Calling

St. Benedict of Nursia, born around 480 AD in Italy, is a central figure in the history of Western monasticism. Raised in a wealthy family, he was sent to Rome for education but became disillusioned by the cityβs moral decay. Seeking a deeper spiritual connection, Benedict withdrew to the mountains of Subiaco, living as a hermit in a cave. His time in solitude, devoted to prayer and reflection, laid the groundwork for his future role as a spiritual leader and reformer.
