REFLECTIONS ON THE WORD 📖

On the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel recounts how Jesus heals a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. This story highlights the healing power of Christ and offers insights into the nature of sacraments. As a sacramental people, we believe that God’s grace is conferred through physical signs, just as Jesus used touch and words to heal.
Mark’s Gospel also reflects the early Church’s mission to the Gentiles, who embraced the good news of Jesus. However, there is a striking irony—after giving the man the gift of speech, Jesus tells him not to spread the news. This is part of what scholars call the “messianic secret,” where Jesus wanted to avoid being seen merely as a miracle worker.
The Gospel invites us to reflect on our own faith: do we seek Jesus only for miracles, or do we also long for the deeper salvation he offers? 🙏☝️
