Pax. The growth trajectory for School Year 2024-2025 is a critical period for San Beda College Alabang as we craft our five-year development plan (2025-2030), anchored on the gains achieved and lessons learned in the last five years. Let us forge ahead with the overarching theme Ora et Labora: our Journey to Excellence by Faith in God and Works that Lead to a Future-proof School and Sustainable Economy. In shaping our path forward, here follows our renewed focus area themes that should guide us in the course of the next five years.

1. On-going Christian Formation in Worship, Faith, and Morals: We must recognize the importance of nurturing spiritual growth and character development among our learners, faculty, and staff. With love and excellence, we remain committed to our Catholic Faith and true to our Benedictine and Bedan heritage. Our unwavering pledge to Catholic education must permeate all aspects of campus life and learning, integrating faith into academic pursuits, thus fostering character development, ethical decision-making, and a sense of purpose. As we engage in the Sacramental life of the Church, faith-sharing groups, and moral education programs, we contribute to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not only academically competent but also grounded in the life of faith and good works.

2. Curriculum Development Amid Technological Advances in Education and Global Citizenship Education: As technology continues to evolve rapidly, we must adapt our curricula to equip our learners with relevant skills for the future. Global citizenship education will empower our graduates to engage with complex global challenges. Leveraging ethically technological advances (primarily Generative Artificial Intelligence and Chatboxes, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, Online Learning Platforms, and Data Analytics and Personalization), we design innovative learning experiences that prepare learners for the challenges of the 21st century. Global Citizenship Education is a cornerstone of this effort, emphasizing cross-cultural understanding, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. By equipping our learners with a global Catholic mindset, we aim to produce graduates who can thrive in an interconnected world.

3. Highly Engaged and Responsive Organization (HERO) and Robust Industry Linkages and Alumni Relations: As a highly engaged and responsive organization, our learning institution is committed to providing the best opportunities in learner engagement with industry partners that develop the right skills and expertise appropriate for national development.  Strengthening our ties with industry partners ensures a vibrant network of support, mentorship, and collaboration for our learners’ benefit. By fostering strong relationships, we create a community that thrives together. Moreover, we must establish a robust alumni relations program to ensure our alumni remain connected to their alma mater. Through mentorship programs, career services, and networking events, former students not only continue to benefit from the school’s resources long after graduation but – equally important – play an essential role in shaping our school’s future by contributing their expertise and experiences, and by sharing their resources.

4. Accredited Programs and Systems: Maintaining high standards of quality through accreditation ensures that our programs meet rigorous benchmarks. Accreditation enhances reputation and provides assurance to our stakeholders. To maintain our school’s reputation for excellence, we must prioritize maintaining and sustaining accredited programs and quality assurance systems. We must engage in rigorous quality assurance processes both internally and externally to ensure our academic offerings meet national and international standards. Quality assurance systems include the efficient management of our fiscal and environmental resources. Our accreditation by reputable accrediting agencies not only validates the quality of our programs but also enhances our graduates’ employability and mobility.

5. Sustained Academic Research Capabilities and Excellent Research Outputs: Furthering the improvement of academic research capabilities is paramount in producing excellent research outputs. We are committed to offering targeted courses and training programs that foster essential academic research skills among faculty and staff, empowering them to enhance their capabilities. We are committed to producing impactful research that contributes to national and international development goals.

6. Active Social Responsibility Engagements: Our engagement with social responsibility initiatives reflects our commitment to sustaining positive change, particularly in the areas of poverty alleviation and economic prosperity, quality education, healthcare, and environmental protection. Hence, we must actively contribute to society through our social responsibility engagements, supported by data and research, informing decisions that steer societies towards positive change. By aligning our research efforts with national and international sustainable development goals, we address pressing societal challenges. Whether through scientific breakthroughs or community outreach initiatives, we remain committed to contributing national efforts for deep economic and social transformation.

7. Promotion of Culture and the Arts: We celebrate creativity, diversity, and cultural heritage by enriching the lives of our learners and contributing to a more vibrant Catholic school culture that nurtures academic knowledge, creativity, emotional expression, and social awareness. Our learners are engaged in culture and arts education that results in better academic and non-academic outcomes. Their exposure to various art forms—such as music, theater, dance, and visual arts—enhances their academic achievements, reading skills, creative thinking, critical analysis, agility, and collaboration skills. With these various art forms deeply rooted in the rich history of the Church, our learners are exposed to the richness of our Catholic and Benedictine tradition. Moreover, as we are called to give dutiful witness, integrating culture and arts inspired by the Gospel, we uphold our mission to foster faith, values, and ethical living. By cultivating culture and the arts in our curricula, we contribute to the development of our learners’ character, empathy, and understanding of diverse perspectives, encouraging them to become compassionate, socially responsible, and culturally aware individuals.

In summary, our growth trajectory is not only about financial metrics but also about holistic development, ethical values, and societal impact. By aligning ourselves with these themes, we aim to create a future-proof school that serves as a beacon of excellence – that in all things, God may be glorified!

Don Timothy Buhain: A Journey to Success through Ora, Labora, et Servio

Don Timothy Buhain: A Journey to Success through Ora, Labora, et Servio

By Angelica R. Cabrito

In this special feature, we explore the life and success story of Don Timothy Buhain, a figure synonymous with dedication and innovation in the field of educational publishing.

The Early Years: Laying the Foundation

Books are deeply ingrained in the very essence of Don Timothy Buhain’s existence. His entry into the educational publishing industry was predestined, being the eldest of the third generation family with a prominent business in the book industry. Don felt from the very start that he needed to repay the generosity of his family who provided him with education and support. After he joined Rex in 1992, the feeling of longing to repay transcended and became a passion for education and entrepreneurship.

Rising in the ranks of their own company, Don gained a deeper understanding on the power of educational materials in molding the future of learners. After witnessing the transformative impact of education first hand, he was motivated to take on the role of CEO. It occurred to him that his journey was intricately tied to Ora, Labora, et Servio (Pray, Work, and Serve), embodying a commitment to both family and the mission of REX.

About REX Education: Empowering Learners and Educators

REX Bookstore, now known as REX Education, demonstrates unwavering dedication to empowering learners and educators by offering innovative, high-quality, and accessible educational solutions. The founding story of REX Education traces back to a firm commitment to excellence in creating educational resources for both teaching and learning. They firmly believe in the transformative impact of education, which has the capacity to elevate communities and propel national advancement. REX envisions themselves in “every home” as they do not only cater to the four walls of formal education, hence, they understand that there are many learners that can be reached beyond the formal education setting

Overcoming Obstacles: Don Buhain’s Path to Success

Success is never attained without encountering hurdles along the way. For Don, the primary challenge he faces is within himself. As he previously mentioned, when one is involved in their family business, there may be a lack of individuals willing to point out errors or provide constructive criticism. Thus, a leader must remain attentive and prudent regarding their contributions to the company.

“Be humble but not helpless.” According to Don, embracing humility involves acknowledging that seeking help, may it be from other board members or elder family members, is not only acceptable but also propitious. Being a leader does not stop by recognizing problems and challenges in the organization, but also being able to present resolutions in addressing them.

One particular memory of Don stands out from 1993 when he faced a challenging situation. REX scheduled a seminar at St. Paul’s Bocaue to fulfill a commitment to a client, however, an oversight by their transportation head resulted in the negligence to fetch the speaker from Cavite. Faced with this dilemma, Don made the decision to hire a helicopter to bring the speaker from Cavite to Bocaue in time for her 8 AM talk. That decision incurred a cost of Php 25,000 at the time. In spite of that, it reinforced the client’s confidence in REX’s commitment to delivering on its promises.

Nurturing Every Child for Lifelong Learning

Notwithstanding, one of the most—if not the most—pivotal moments during Don’s tenure as CEO was the re-articulation of their mission. Transitioning from simply comprehensive textbook publishing to “Nurturing Every Child for Lifelong Learning.” During the pandemic, their digital learning platform facilitated online education, while their printing services played a helpful role in producing print-based learning modules for the Department of Education and numerous LGUs. This shift signified that they are not just selling books, but they were already touching lives.

A Legacy of Leadership: Don Buhain’s Journey

Over Don’s past 32 years with REX, he has actively sought assistance from numerous consultants and pursued further education, including post-graduate studies (Master of Entrepreneurship) at the Asian Institute of Management, where he received the Superior Performance award. He also participated in numerous short courses both domestically and internationally.

At his core, Don is most proud of the decision to retain all employees during challenging times, despite the widespread retrenchments amid the CoVid-19 pandemic in 2020. Guided by God and a desire to give back to those who have supported the company, his leadership made him realize the importance of standing by his employees and acknowledging his responsibility to support them during difficult times. Don’s decision reflected a shift in perspective, viewing challenges through a lens of compassion and generosity, reinforcing REX Education’s dedication to its people and its mission.

Don thought that it was time to demonstrate the sincerity behind the common speeches of leaders saying “Human resources are the most important resource of our company,” to safeguard every individual within the organization and uphold their true value. In Don’s moments of adversity, God’s presence was palpable to him, guiding his actions as he faced challenges head-on.

Charting the Course: The Road Ahead of Rex

REX Education embraces advancements and developments as opportunities to enhance learning experiences and expand access to education. They are steadfast in leveraging technology to generate immersive and interactive educational solutions that cater to a wide learning preferences, as well as support teaching effectiveness and efficiency.

Over the past 74 years, REX has undergone significant development, evolving from a second-hand bookstore in Azcarraga (now called C.M Recto) to its current position. According to Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, the Philippines ranked last in Reading and second to last in Science and Math. Additionally, 69% of 15-year-old children express pessimism about their future prospects—a disheartening indication that these young individuals have lost hope before even embarking on their journey. Furthermore, recent studies reveal that the best and brightest students are reluctant to pursue careers in teaching.

REX’s ultimate aspiration is to positively impact these individuals. They are tasked with the monumental challenge of uplifting the last, lost, and least, but with their mindset of innovation, growth, and impact, they are confident that their efforts will make a meaningful difference. Currently, REX Education has a multitude of ongoing partnerships and projects with various private organizations and government entities. Every effort converges on a singular objective: empowering learners to reach their fullest potential. All these endeavors are incomplete without the principles of “Ora, Labora, et Servio.” One must pray diligently, work tirelessly, and serve both their family and company, aligning with its mission.

We are no longer into selling books, we are actually touching lives

As Don aptly puts it, “We are no longer into selling books; we are actually touching lives.” This encapsulates the essence of REX Education’s transformative impact on the educational landscape, underscoring the power of learning to inspire, uplift, and empower individuals and communities alike. Forging a strong partnership with San Beda College Alabang, REX continues to innovate and expand its reach with the legacy of Don Timothy Buhain’s leadership that serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring value of education in shaping a better world

historic James Jepson Binns (1901) and Johannes Klais K.G. Opus (1958) pipe organs located at the Fr. Roberto De Jesus Auditorium and St. Benedict Chapel respectively, meticulously restored to their former glory by the world-renowned, Diego Cera Organ Builders. As the sacred instruments were unveiled, a palpable sense of awe filled the air, reflecting the profound reverence for music as a conduit for spiritual expression and divine connection. Now, these sacred sounds will grace the spaces of San Beda College Alabang, enriching worship and inspiring a new generation of musicians devoted to mastering the art of the pipe organ. Unveiling and Blessing of Historic Pipe Organs Culminates in Spectacular Concerto Prelude

Following the solemn blessing, the celebration reached its zenith with a breathtaking Concerto Prelude, featuring an ensemble of esteemed musicians and choirs. Internationally acclaimed concert organist and titular organist of the world-renowned Bamboo Organ, Prof. Armando V. Salarza, took center stage, captivating the audience with his virtuoso performance. Joined by Dom Eugenio Labrague, OSB, Darren Vega, Coro San Benedetto, and Saxum Children’s Chorus, the ensemble delivered a mesmerizing performance that transcended the boundaries of time and space. Resonating Spirituality: The Enduring Legacy of the Pipe Organ

The pipe organ, a longstanding fixture in Roman Catholic liturgy, carries a rich legacy of spiritual resonance. Originating from the ingenious mind of Ctesibius of Alexandria in the 3rd century BC, it transitioned from secular events to sacred spaces by the 10th century, evolving into one of the most intricate mechanical instruments of pre-industrial times. Pope Benedict XVI once reminisced about its profound impact, describing how its harmonies, coupled with choir melodies and the church’s luminous ambiance, stirred a deep sense of joy—a divine connection experienced through music. Emphasizing its evangelizing potency, the Pope underscored the organ’s role in conveying the splendor of faith, akin to a proclamation of the Gospel itself. Moreover, historical accounts
reveal how missionaries leveraged its melodious prowess to aid in the conversion of indigenous communities, recognizing the memorability of prayers and hymns sung to the accompaniment
of the organ’s resonance. Despite a decline in its prevalence, a resurgence of interest among younger enthusiasts signals a renewed commitment to safeguarding its sacred significance for future generations. Through their dedication, the pipe organ continues to echo the timeless beauty and spiritual depth embedded within its majestic notes.

Celebration of the Sto. Nino Festival: A Tribute to Catholic Faith and Community

By Gino Antonio A. Rivera III, MS

Held dear at San Beda College Alabang (SBCA) is a tradition infused by the spirit of camaraderie, faith, and cultural richness. The Pista ng Sto. Niño, with the theme “Dakilang Gabay sa Sama-samang Paglalakbay,” was once again celebrated on campus from January 17 to 20, 2024. This eagerly anticipated event unfolded as a grand spectacle, weaving together moments of
reverence, joy, and unity.

For the Bedan community, the Pista ng Sto. Niño is more than just a festivity but a cherished tradition that brings together students, faculty, staff, and alumni in jubilant celebration. This year marked a significant milestone as the festival expanded its horizons by introducing new elements while keeping the activities the community has grown to expect and love.

Day 1 kicked off with solemnity and reverence, as the Novena Mass set the tone for the days ahead. The highlight of the day was the Enthronement of the Sto. Niño on the opening of the festival, led by the Very Rev. Fr. Gerardo Ma. De Villa, OSB, Rector-President of SBCA. His words resonated deeply within the hearts of attendees, echoing the school’s unwavering commitment to faith and community.

In his message, Fr. Gerard emphasized the significance of the Sto. Niño festival. “Celebrating the Pista ng Sto. Niño is more than just a Bedan custom; it’s a cornerstone of the Bedan identity. The annual tribute showcases Bedan talent and fosters the spirit of service, mirroring the humility and obedience of the Sto. Niño. This celebration encourages all Bedans to grow in wisdom and stature, just like the child Jesus,” Fr. Gerard said.

The subsequent days were filled with a myriad of activities that showcased the talent, creativity, and devotion of Bedans. Hosted by the Tertiary Schools, under the guidance of Hermano Mayor Atty. Juan Ruffo D. Chong, the festival spanned four days of vibrant activities and meaningful ceremonies. The opening ceremony at the SBCA open field set the stage for an unforgettable celebration.

The campus buzzed with activity, each moment a testament to the vibrant spirit of the whole Bedan community. Highlights included a field demonstration by the Integrated Basic Education students, the “Click, Like, Share” film showing, and the blessing of the newly renovated school facilities.

One of the festival’s standout moments was the human formation of the Sto. Niño image, a breathtaking display of unity and devotion where students came together to create a living representation of their faith. The event underscored the deep-rooted spirituality that permeates every aspect of life at SBCA.

The Communication and Media Studies (CMS) Department played a pivotal role in the festival’s success, producing the marketing and promotional materials. Additionally, the festival’s official jingle, composed and produced by Mr. James Turla (BACMS 3A) added a melodious touch to the  elebration, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Another significant aspect of this year’s festival was the exhibition titled “Images of Faith: Ecclesiastical Treasures in the Philippines” featuring the collection of Atty. Pablo Trillana that showcases the rich religious heritage deeply ingrained in Filipino culture. Additionally, the launching of the Golden Jubilee Book served as a testament to SBCA’s enduring legacy and commitment to academic excellence.

The festival also served as a platform for celebrating milestones and achievements. The blessing of the newly renovated offices of the Tertiary Schools, Basic Education High School, Instructional Media & Equipment Office, Student Internship Program Office, and the new walk-in School Bookstore underscored the school’s dedication to progress and excellence.

The youthful spirit of the festivities was also evident with activities like the Sinulog Festival and the Batch Cheer Competition, saturating the campus with energy and dynamism. The unveiling
and lowering of time capsules at the construction sites of the Technical High School, School of Engineering & Technology, and Music and Performing Arts buildings, symbolized a bridge between
the past, present, and future of SBCA.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the Mr. and Ms. San Beda of the Tertiary Schools. Students showcased not only their physical beauty but also their intellect, talent, and charisma. With
grace and poise, contestants captivated the audience with their confidence and charm, embodying the spirit of excellence and leadership that SBCA strives to instill in its students. As contestants
dazzled on stage, they not only vied for the coveted titles but also inspired their peers to embrace their individuality and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination. Mr. Paolo Miguel Mackay (Psychology) and Ms. Ymannuelle Gem C. Torres (Communication and Media Studies) were crowned as the winners.

The culmination of the festival was the Sto. Niño Grand Procession and Holy Mass, a deeply moving tribute to the Sto. Niño that brought the entire community together in prayer and reflection.
The day concluded with a concert featuring guest performer Lola Amour, whose music filled the air with melodies of hope and inspiration. Finally, a breathtaking fireworks display illuminated
the night sky, casting a radiant glow over the hearts and minds of all who bore witness to this momentous occasion.

Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Fr. Gerardo, OSB, shared, “The Pista isn’t just a festive event; it’s a vital part of being a Bedan, solidifying their unique skills, reaffirming their core values, and reminding them of the constant growth. In living the spirit of the Pista, Bedans not only honor the Sto. Niño, they embody His very
essence, weaving his gentle wisdom and boundless compassion into the very fabric of their being.” SBCA’s celebration of the Pista ng Sto. Niño was a testament to the
spirit of unity, faith, and community that pervades the institution. As the festivities came to a close, the memories created and the bonds forged during this joyous occasion will continue to inspire and uplift the entire SBCA community in the days and years to come.

“What Fr. Gerard would like to happen is dapat naka-concentrate [ang CFPA] sa homegrown talents, so, sino ‘yung homegrown talents? Siempre, kayong mga mag-aaral ng San Beda! As the Administrator, magpapa-training ako, magpapa-audition, magpapa-workshop, at gagawa ako ng mga palabas and activities to encourage students and employees to join and participate. That’s the main purpose of the CFPA, to build the best of the best in the South. Kasi laging kapag sinabi mong conservatory of music, musicians, naroon lagi sa North. Sa UP, sa UST, naroon sila pumupunta para mag-aral ng music. So, the ultimate goal, the strategic plan of CFPA 5 years from now is to have a school for music for those who are interested in performing arts. Based on our growth development plan, our focus is the promotion of Culture and Arts,” pahayag ni Ms. Cheri.
