Genesis 9:1-13; Mark 8:27-33
(Fr Aelred Nilo, OSB)

Brothers and sister, why does life have to be so confusing?! We wish we could see the future and know what we were supposed to do!

Quote on Life tells us, “LIFE IS LIKE A MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION, SOMETIMES THE CHOICES CONFUSE YOU NOT THE QUESTION ITSELF.”

If we pay attention to the story of creation in the book of Genesis we notice that the situation only seems to get worse. It began with the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Then, it was followed by the story of Cain’s envy that led to the killing of his brother Abel.

As the human race populated the earth, more sins were committed, sins of every kind. By the time we arrive at Genesis Chapter 9, which is our reading today, we read that the unity between animals and humanity was broken. The animals now fear and dread us.

Today we read the following passage, “God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: "Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth. DREAD FEAR OF YOU SHALL COME UPON ALL THE ANIMALS OF THE EARTH AND ALL THE BIRDS OF THE AIR, upon all the creatures that move about on the ground and all the fishes of the sea; into your power they are delivered.” (Gen 9:1-2)

But the lesson of the story Noah is not about the Flood because there were many floods in the history of humanity and no doubt, there will be many more. Rather, THE STORY BRINGS OUT THE INCREASING INFIDELITY OF MAN TO GOD’S CREATION BECAUSE OF THE SINS OF MAN.

Saint Paul wrote the Romans: “To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, DEATH REIGNED FROM THE TIME OF ADAM TO THE TIME OF MOSES, EVEN OVER THOSE WHO DID NOT SIN BY BREAKING A COMMAND, AS DID ADAM, WHO IS A PATTERN OF THE ONE TO COME.” (Romans 5:12-14)

Brothers and sisters, DESPITE OUR DISOBEDIENCE AND INFIDELITY GOD REMAINS FAITHFUL TO US AND HIS UNCHANGING COMMITMENT TO HIS CREATION IS BROUGHT OUT IN THE COVENANT WITH NOAH. In our reading from Genesis God said to Noah and to his sons with him: " I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; … This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come … I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."

In our gospel today from Mark we heard Jesus asking the people he encountered with this question, “WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?” It is actually a question addressed to each one of us. It is not a question that just asks for information. It is a question that addresses our heart as well as our head. Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question was correct, “you are the Christ.”

Jesus however prophesied that he will be put to death by man. But Jesus’ self-revelation was not acceptable to Peter. He must have been confused so “Peter took him aside and began to rebuke Jesus. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Peter’s confused reaction marks that increasing infidelity of man to God’s creation because of the sins of man. PETER HAD still to learn to accept the whole truth about Jesus, TO RECEIVE JESUS AS HE WAS AND NOT AS PETER WANTED HIM TO BE.

Like Peter we are all on that same journey, coming TO RECEIVE JESUS AS HE REALLY IS AND NOT JUST AS WE WANT HIM TO BE OR IMAGINE HIM TO BE.

We are also asked like Peter WHO REALLY JESUS IS TO US?
